Trees for Citizens

At citizenship ceremonies held throughout the year, over 1000 new citizens are welcomed to Oxfordshire.

A Lieutenancy representative attends each ceremony on behalf of the Monarch and, over the last year to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, each citizen has been presented with a native tree. The trees were donated by Ridge Clean Energy.

The new citizens could choose to take their tree with them to plant at their home, or have their tree planted on their behalf in the county.

Since the ‘trees for citizens’ programme began on Monday 7th February 2022 (the day after Accession Day) over 700 trees have now been planted or earmarked for the following sites:
- The Earth Trust (260);
- Banbury Country Park (250);
- Charlbury Centenary Wood (200)

The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative comes to an end on 31 March 2023. Its aims were to create a living legacy with over a million trees planted in Her Majesty’s name across the nation.

Following the death of Her Majesty, the trees planted will also serve as a lasting tribute to her extraordinary service to her country and her people.
