Vice Lord-Lieutenant opens village's war memorial

Brian Buchan DL, the Vice Lord-Lieutenant, dedicated the new war memorial for 10 fallen soldiers and airman in the small village of Fernham, in the Vale of the White Horse.

Some 101 years since the end of the First World War, the memorial sets out the 10 names of those from the village that gave their lives, in both World Wars. Engraved in the memorial is the Kohima Epitaph (When you go home, tell them of us etc.) and the outline of a First world War soldier, arms reversed. Each of the designs were cut out by laser in special steel that is designed to have surface rust (Like the Angel of the North). In the afternoon sunlight, the sun projects the names and images onto the church wall.

Flanked by the Colour Party of the local Royal British Legion, Brian gave a moving speech to the villagers about the need to remember those who have given their lives for others and commended the village team that created and delivered this wonderful memorial. Neil Sutherland DL (in kilt) and villager Tom Arnold, were acting in place of the Vicar, who had contracted Covid.
